The Printing Industry Exchange (PIE) staff are experienced individuals within the printing industry that are dedicated to helping and maintaining a high standard of ethics in this business. We are a privately owned company with principals in the business having a combined total of 103 years experience in the printing industry.

PIE's staff is here to help the print buyer find competitive pricing and the right printer to do their job, and also to help the printing companies increase their revenues by providing numerous leads they can quote on and potentially get new business.

This is a free service to the print buyer. All you do is find the appropriate bid request form, fill it out, and it is emailed out to the printing companies who do that type of printing work. The printers best qualified to do your job, will email you pricing and if you decide to print your job through one of these print vendors, you contact them directly.

We have kept the PIE system simple -- we get a monthly fee from the commercial printers who belong to our service. Once the bid request is submitted, all interactions are between the print buyers and the printers.

We are here to help, you can contact us by email at info@printindustry.com.

Custom Printing: Web Design That Translates Into Print

Saturday, October 10th, 2015

Creating a visual identity for a business is a formidable undertaking, rife with visual implications, functional issues, and connotations and nuances in tone. Therefore, it’s important to approach it with a sense of humor and play: an experimental approach that allows you to try many things, fail at some, and succeed at others. Being too serious about this will cripple your efforts. (more…)

Custom Printing: One Printer’s Best Sales Practices

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2015

As a commercial printing broker, I like to be wooed by a new printing vendor. My favorite words to hear: a heartfelt “How can I help you?”

I had lunch with the VP of Operations and the Business Development Manager of a local custom printing shop about a week ago, and since that time I have seen a number of positive signs that have led me to want to work with this vendor. Here’s a short list. (more…)

Commercial Printing: Thoughts on Menu Creation

Monday, August 10th, 2015

A colleague recently sent me a link to an online booklet called 7 Tips for Crafting an Exceptional Menu, which Lightspeed, a provider of IT services for the food industry, allowed me to download in exchange for my name, email, and phone number. (more…)

Custom Printing: Halftone Dots vs. Aboriginal Dot Painting

Friday, June 5th, 2015

I was recently preparing a lesson for my fiancee’s and my art therapy work with the autistic. We are going to do Aboriginal dot paintings on paper plates that we have made into tambourines (with washers and bells for the tinkling sound). They will be used in the group’s music class. (more…)

Commercial Printing: How to Approach Printing Errors

Saturday, May 16th, 2015

I just received an unsettling email from a print brokering client today. She is a designer, and two small problems had occurred with a set of identity materials for her client. (more…)

Custom Printing: A Map Maker or a Printer, or Both

Monday, March 23rd, 2015

In business, it is a truism that if you can do one thing really, really well, you will be successful as long as that primary service or product you offer is a necessity. Techna-Graphics, Inc., in Washington, DC, seems to fit this business maxim to a “T.” (more…)

Custom Printing: Paste Binding Web-Offset Booklets

Friday, February 20th, 2015

Have you ever received a financial statement in the mail, perhaps a short (8- to 16-page) prospectus for a mutual fund, and noticed that it was not saddle stitched, perfect bound, or bound in any other usual way? The nested pages just stuck together and didn’t fall apart. This is called paste-binding, and for the right commercial printing jobs it’s a wonderful way to save money and time. (more…)

Custom Printing: Evaluating Printing Estimates

Tuesday, February 17th, 2015

I spent some time yesterday reviewing a detailed printing estimate for a brokering client of mine. It was for a print book, but it just as easily could have been for a brochure, booklet, poster, or any other job. (more…)

Custom Printing: An Update on Nanography

Wednesday, February 4th, 2015

I have often praised the HP Indigo in PIE Blog articles. I consider it to be state of the art in digital electrophotographic printing. When my brokering clients need the highest levels of color saturation and detail in images, and when the length of their press runs warrants digital custom printing, I always seek out vendors with HP Indigo equipment. (more…)

Commercial Printing: More Benefits of Using a Broker

Wednesday, December 31st, 2014

Writing the last PIE Blog article about print brokering work got me thinking. Since them I’ve come up with a few more benefits of working with a custom printing broker: the kinds of services I bring to my own commercial printing brokerage work and what I have seen in the work of other brokers. (more…)
