The Printing Industry Exchange (PIE) staff are experienced individuals within the printing industry that are dedicated to helping and maintaining a high standard of ethics in this business. We are a privately owned company with principals in the business having a combined total of 103 years experience in the printing industry.

PIE's staff is here to help the print buyer find competitive pricing and the right printer to do their job, and also to help the printing companies increase their revenues by providing numerous leads they can quote on and potentially get new business.

This is a free service to the print buyer. All you do is find the appropriate bid request form, fill it out, and it is emailed out to the printing companies who do that type of printing work. The printers best qualified to do your job, will email you pricing and if you decide to print your job through one of these print vendors, you contact them directly.

We have kept the PIE system simple -- we get a monthly fee from the commercial printers who belong to our service. Once the bid request is submitted, all interactions are between the print buyers and the printers.

We are here to help, you can contact us by email at info@printindustry.com.

Digital On Demand Book Printing: How Many Copies? How many Pages?

Monday, November 21st, 2011

A print brokering client of mine publishes literary works of poetry and fiction. She came to me last week with a book printing job to estimate: 100 copies of a 315-page perfect-bound text, black-ink-only with a four-color cover. These are “reader copies” of the book, and are also called “galley proofs.” Reviewers will make suggestions that the author will then incorporate into the finished book printing run. (more…)

Book Printing: Fit the Job Specs to the Printer’s Equipment

Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

If you buy a number of different kinds of printing from a number of different printing companies, you may be surprised that a vendor providing a low estimate on one job may actually submit a high bid on another. I was quite surprised recently with the large pricing spread in three book printing estimates. (more…)

Magazine Printing: It’s Always Wise to Have a Back-up Plan

Monday, November 14th, 2011

About seven years ago, when I was a custom printing consultant, I received a crisis call on deadline night. I learned that a tornado had ripped off the roof of the business printing vendor that had already started producing a 64-page weekly issue of the Monday magazine. The printer couldn’t complete the job. It was Friday night at about 8:00 p.m. (more…)

Book Printing: Offset vs. On-Demand Digital; Local vs. China

Wednesday, November 9th, 2011

I have two custom printing clients who are bucking the trends. They are self publishing books, but they want me to hook them up with offset printing companies. They have chosen not to self-publish with online, on-demand printing companies. They do not want to send their custom printing jobs to vendors in China. They want actual ink on paper, printed locally. (more…)

Custom Printing: Print Flyers vs. Online Flyers

Monday, November 7th, 2011

I read an article today suggesting that on-line flyers would replace print flyers, not immediately, but in the next five to ten years. (more…)

Custom Printing: Adding Marketing Cards to a Magazine or Catalog

Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011

When you read a magazine or catalog, you’re thinking about content: the message it imparts, the articles, photos, and perhaps even the ads. When the publisher of the magazine looks at an issue, he or she must think about ways to pay for producing the magazine. This funding may include ads other companies have paid to insert in the magazine, but it may also include marketing items for the magazine itself. Subscription offers fall into this category, and there are several ways to add these promotional cards to a print catalog or a magazine. (more…)

Custom Printing Is Alive and Well in Ocean City

Sunday, October 30th, 2011

On a recent trip to Ocean City I made it a point to determine exactly what kind of custom printing market existed. I wanted to expand my print brokering reach into this Maryland city, and I was doing some market research. I was able to enter the environment as an objective observer and identify what was, and what was not, being printed and to see how this reflected the characteristics of the audience, the visitors to this ocean resort town. (more…)

Postcard Printers Mix Postcards with PURL’s for Maximum Effect

Monday, October 24th, 2011

People say that print is dead, but I know better. Every time I look in the mailbox, I have a stack of mail.

From what I have read in trade journals, direct mail magazines, on-line news, and Post Office publications, although the stream of First Class mail has slowed down (due to online banking and email), direct mail marketing has actually increased its scope. And what better, cheaper, and more effective mode of direct mail can you choose than marketing postcards? Particularly when combined with Internet landing pages. (more…)

Book Printing Case Study: Digital vs. Offset Printing and Paper Opacity

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

A client of mine recently reprinted a small booklet. It actually wasn’t due to any errors. The book was just very popular, and she had run out of copies. My client had initially printed 300 each of two versions (one in Spanish and one in English) at a custom printing vendor with both offset and digital equipment. (more…)

Book Printing Case Study: Getting Bids for a Coffee-Table Photo Book

Thursday, October 20th, 2011

Normally I can get coffee table book printing costs for my print brokering clients rather quickly and easily. I work with printing companies of every sort (printing services that specialize in books, large-format banners, marketing collateral, etc.). But a unique project came to me recently that posed challenges, a small book of photographs. The photographer had solicited pricing from various on demand book printing suppliers she had found on the Internet and had opted instead for higher quality and a lower unit price. (more…)
