The Printing Industry Exchange (PIE) staff are experienced individuals within the printing industry that are dedicated to helping and maintaining a high standard of ethics in this business. We are a privately owned company with principals in the business having a combined total of 103 years experience in the printing industry.

PIE's staff is here to help the print buyer find competitive pricing and the right printer to do their job, and also to help the printing companies increase their revenues by providing numerous leads they can quote on and potentially get new business.

This is a free service to the print buyer. All you do is find the appropriate bid request form, fill it out, and it is emailed out to the printing companies who do that type of printing work. The printers best qualified to do your job, will email you pricing and if you decide to print your job through one of these print vendors, you contact them directly.

We have kept the PIE system simple -- we get a monthly fee from the commercial printers who belong to our service. Once the bid request is submitted, all interactions are between the print buyers and the printers.

We are here to help, you can contact us by email at info@printindustry.com.

Commercial Printing: B&B’s “Look” Hits It Dead Center

Thursday, November 29th, 2012

I visited a retail clothing store with my fiancée today. I went in because she wanted to see the shop, but I quickly got lost in the way the décor of the store, its wall and floor signage, lighting, wall paint colors, merchandise tags, music, and avant garde employee attire all came together to create a coherent, bold atmosphere. (Let’s call the store B&B, to make it somewhat of a hypothetical example of good marketing and design.) (more…)

Large Format Printing Services: Printed Bed Sheets

Thursday, November 15th, 2012

My fiancee brought home new printed sheets last week, and I was truly impressed with the strides that have been made in digital large format printing on fabrics. The sheets were covered with handwritten letters and images of envelopes spread across the large, queen-size format. Handwritten text in some areas included drop shadows in gray type, and there were stamps printed in orange and black. (more…)

Poster Printing: A Venue for Art, Marketing, and Politics

Wednesday, October 24th, 2012

Posters have a long history as works of art, marketing venues, and vehicles for protest. What they all share–in the best of cases–is immediate impact. They’re powerful. They present a single image and a few words (like a small billboard) that grab you. (more…)

Large Format Printing: Your Options for Political Signage

Thursday, September 13th, 2012

With the presidential election less than two months away, it’s definitely the season for political signage. And surprisingly enough, there are multiple options to consider if you need to produce this printed product for a client. (more…)

Large Format Printing: Standee Lightbox Case Study

Saturday, August 25th, 2012

As a commercial printing broker and designer, I think that certain avenues for graphic design are still expanding, in spite of the drop off in others. I’ve read a lot over the last few years about the growth in label production (particularly personalized labels), flexible packaging, and large format printing. (more…)

Large Format Printing: Finishing Techniques

Monday, August 13th, 2012

Large format printing is big now, not just in terms of size but also in terms of popularity. Just look at the sides of buildings, buses, and cars, decked with large format print work. Ink jet printing has revolutionized advertising in the last decade. Therefore, it behooves us to understand some of the options for finishing, within the arena of large format printing, as well as understanding how the ink is sprayed onto the paper or plastic substrate. (more…)

Sticker Printing: Any Size, Color, or Shape

Wednesday, August 1st, 2012

I just saw a video made by a custom printing vendor I work with in my print brokering business providing an education in the new realities of die cutting. The equipment showcased in the video is the Mimaki integrated inkjet printer and cutter. (I’m sure that many other printers have similar equipment, so you may want to ask your print provider, if this technology seems appropriate for your work.) (more…)

Large Format Printing: Movie Standee Lightboxes

Friday, July 13th, 2012

As I have noted in many prior PIE Blogs, I install “standees” and other signage in movie theaters as part of my multi-faceted custom printing life. One such standee promotes The Rise of the Guardians, an upcoming animated film. Although this 14-foot wide and 8-foot high cardboard display portrays six of the movie’s main characters on zig-zagging boxes stacked on a wide base, what makes this particular installation intriguing is its structure. The entire standee comprises a set of six “lightboxes.” (more…)

Commercial Printing: Advances in Product Packaging

Thursday, June 7th, 2012

In a world where offset and digital custom printing are struggling for a place among digital-only communications media—such as e-books, Yelp, and Facebook–product packaging work is actually growing. (more…)

Custom Printing: Drupa Highlights Future of Printing

Thursday, May 31st, 2012

Wikipedia defines “bellwether” as “any entity in a given arena that serves to create or influence trends or to presage future happenings.” In the arena of offset and digital printing, this word fits drupa perfectly. (more…)
