The Printing Industry Exchange (PIE) staff are experienced individuals within the printing industry that are dedicated to helping and maintaining a high standard of ethics in this business. We are a privately owned company with principals in the business having a combined total of 103 years experience in the printing industry.

PIE's staff is here to help the print buyer find competitive pricing and the right printer to do their job, and also to help the printing companies increase their revenues by providing numerous leads they can quote on and potentially get new business.

This is a free service to the print buyer. All you do is find the appropriate bid request form, fill it out, and it is emailed out to the printing companies who do that type of printing work. The printers best qualified to do your job, will email you pricing and if you decide to print your job through one of these print vendors, you contact them directly.

We have kept the PIE system simple -- we get a monthly fee from the commercial printers who belong to our service. Once the bid request is submitted, all interactions are between the print buyers and the printers.

We are here to help, you can contact us by email at info@printindustry.com.

Book Printing: Short-run/Quick-turn Options

Sunday, January 3rd, 2016

As a printing broker, I’ve been providing book printing services for one particular client for about a decade. I’ve always taken the print book to the same shop because this printer has done such a good job for such a reasonable price. (Although periodically I have gotten multiple bids to prove this to my client.) (more…)

Custom Printing: Mass Customization of Bud Light Cans and Diet Coke Bottles

Sunday, December 27th, 2015

Although I myself don’t drink beer, if I did I’d probably want to check out Bud Light due to their cool, variable-data advertising campaign. (more…)

Commercial Printing: Displaying “Words” As “Art”

Monday, October 26th, 2015

Back when I was growing up it was the bumper sticker: “Make Love, Not War.” Easy to print in volume and cheap to buy, the bumper sticker was the mainstay of commercialized, personal self-expression—other than protest signs, of course, and some t-shirts (Che Guevara or the Rolling Stones). (more…)

Finishing Tools for Digital Custom Printing

Tuesday, July 14th, 2015

I always find it intriguing to watch the developments in digital custom printing. There’s a lot of activity in this arena, and the offerings point to the future, making it crystal clear that print is not dead. (more…)

Custom Printing: Digital Inkjet Printing on Floorboards

Monday, March 30th, 2015

I had mentioned about nine months ago that my fiancee’s house had burned. Now we are in the rebuilding phase after the house fire, so I am reviewing more samples of flooring than I really want to see. Ironically, many of them have looked like wood but have been a manufactured, inkjet printed flooring product. (more…)

Custom Printing: Vetting Digital Print Samples

Friday, December 12th, 2014

A print brokering client of mine wants to produce about 100 copies each of almost twenty color print books. I have mentioned this in past blogs, and I have noted that due to the variable-data nature of the job (different books with different colors), digital printing is the best way to approach the job. If you can envision a PMS swatch book, you’ve got a mental image of this product. (more…)

Book Printing: Yearbooks Provide Digital Niche Market

Thursday, January 30th, 2014

I hadn’t thought of it, but it’s a no-brainer. Digital book printing is perfect for yearbooks.

I just read two articles on digital printing that point squarely in this direction: “Sunrise Digital Releases Video Comparison of Book Binding Options, Ideal for School Yearbooks” (PRWEB.com Newswire, press release, 1/9/14) and “I-Sub to Show Off Digi-Foil at Trophex” (www.printweek.com, PrintWeek Team, 1/13/14). Large Format Printing: Focus on Digital Printing Trends

Monday, December 23rd, 2013

I just found three articles on current trends in digital printing that I’d like to share with you. The news is most heartening.

Article #1: “Newsweek Print Edition Is Returning”

The first article is from The Huffington Post (12/04/13, by Joanna Zelman) and is called “Newsweek Print Edition Is Returning.” While one article on one news entity does not confirm a trend, I think in this case the information in startling, provocative, and reflective of the still surviving love of ink on paper. (more…)

Custom Printing: Benefits of Digital On Demand Printing

Tuesday, December 17th, 2013

I was reading NewPage’s This Is Ed #8 Digital Variables tonight, and I saw some important distinctions related to digital printing that I wanted to bring to your attention. First of all, as I’ve noted in prior blogs, print books like New Page’s This Is Ed series are free. They not only showcase paper companies’ best design work, but they also provide a wealth of information on various aspects of commercial printing. I encourage you to contact New Page or any other paper company and get on their mailing list for educational publications like this. (more…)

Commercial Printing: How to Approach New Design Jobs

Saturday, August 17th, 2013

I received three design jobs today from a client of mine. I will be brokering the commercial printing as well as designing the artwork and producing the final, press-ready files. So, as a teaching tool, I’d like to share some of my thoughts as I approached the job today and created the first set of proofs. (more…)
